Chapter 11

Yasmine

My head is spinning. This nymph is the only thing in my life that I have not been able to shake free of and has stayed with me for months, and she had been standing in front of that pompous druid protecting him. Worse still, I saw the glow just under his skin. Having personally experienced what it took to get that glow, my minor irritation had turned into a full-blown jealous rage. My mind reels with images of Nylisa and Cornelius together, and I pick up my pace, carrying my little nymph package close to my chest. As hurt and angry as I am to have found this particular creature in the Archdruid's house, I have to admit to feeling very content having her back in my arms.

Nylisa relaxes and curls into me instead of fighting to get away from me. The act causes my heart to pick up in tempo. I shouldn't be letting her affect me like this. She was in the Archdruid's home. She was protecting him. The same man who spoke under the guise of healing resources and restoring magic while planning to drain those whose very essence is magic. How desperate they are to use magic as they choose, and how stupid they are to think that one man controlling magic could replace the resources that took the Earth millions of years to make. The magic that was created by the lives and deaths of millions of magic-filled souls, creating the Highborn, was never meant to be controlled by anyone but the Highborn themselves.

As we near the front door, Cade jumps in front of me and opens the door, so I can just walk through without having to adjust Nylisa. I don't slow down a beat until I enter my office and lay her down on my couch. Straightening, I stand over her, looking down. There is no fear on her face, even though technically I have kidnapped her from where she had been. Instead, she looks up at me with absolute infatuation, honesty, and maybe some curiosity.

"Yasmine, are we going to talk about what just happened and why the fuck it happened?" Bevan asks rather loudly.

"Don't speak to her like that. You know better. We don't question what she does, we never have." Sapphire says disapprovingly.

"We never have because she's done nothing like this before. We are all Highborn. We are all guardians. You don't see any of us doing what she just did. She just stole what is most likely the mate of the Archdruid of the Earthen Conclave, and I'd like to know why." Bevan speaks out again.

"I am not his mate. I would never be his mate. He made some deal with my queen, and I am conscripted to serve him until she releases me from it. My position is that of a bodyguard, regardless of what you may think." Nylisa spoke up from the sofa, answering Bevan's statement but keeping her eyes on me.

"I saw his skin, Nylisa." I bend down and whisper in her ear, pulling her beautiful silken yellow hair back from her face.
