Chapter Eighteen

Wyatt trudged along the back alley toward Chan’s slaughter house on the outskirts of Denver. While he hadn’t been there in a while, the stench of blood and animal lingered strong. Rambling through the back alleys had freed him of Barlow and his men, who watched everything on the main roads, though throwing Hudson off his trail hadn’t been easy. Now he had to hope he could get through Chan’s son, Zihao to see the man. The temperamental Chinese son lived to protect his aging father and nothing more.

He was surprised Sawyer hadn’t thought of Chan and the possibility of finding copies of his father’s deeds with Da Ming’s belongings. Even though Dodge had found the family’s deeds of proof, he hoped this trip to prove a bit more of history related to the purchases and sales of land by his father. But neither his brother nor his mother had been present to witness Da Ming’s cruel death, and neither had heard the screams coming out of that blazing railcar, that had haunted him all these years.

And he’d watched as Chan and Marcus Benton had removed crates of items belonging to Da Ming prior to setting the railcar on fire. Many of those documents had belonged to his father, and while John McCade had questioned the issue, nothing had been returned. And years later that had been the brunt of the argument he’d had with his father, the last words he’d ever spoken to him in hate. His heart ached to make that right but words in anger couldn’t be taken back and his father had been killed at the hands of Marcus Benton’s half brother before he realized what a fool he’d been.

But now, it was up to him to see if he could coerce his way into Chan’s compound and with any luck find what he was looking for, though there wasn’t any doubt it would cost him. Chan was long past rational thought given his age and his mind burned up from years of opium use. The only ace he’d have in this game of draw was asking for Da Ming’s personal items for Mei Ling. Her brother-in-law had denied her the items long ago, angered at her lack of following Chinese custom and joining his household on Da Ming’s death. Instead, she had remained on at the McCade ranch as much a part of the family as any one of them.

He turned the corner, checking behind him as he approached the slaughter house, resisting the urge to pull a revolver as several Chinese men narrowed the gap behind him. Chan had men posted all over town, and these two had been on him for a couple of minutes, though they weren’t the reason the hair on the back of his neck stood. Marcus Benton had been riding his mind all day. There was no doubt the man was involved in the fraudulent deed issue, and he might just find proof enough of that today.

His father had always had Da Ming make two exact copies of every deed, without question.
