Chapter Thirteen

Wild April Grayson was having a great Monday, even though she kept coming up with different sums in one column and her body ached a bit from playing around with Cole.

When she went to refill her coffee, Kelly was leaning up against the sink in the kitchenette. She had tears in her eyes and was rubbing her belly.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were here? Are you all right?” April said, moving forward to give her a gentle hug.

“I wanted to get myself under control first.”

“Why don’t you sit down for a moment?” April said. “I can make you some tea.”

“That would be nice.” Kelly sounded so miserable that April’s heart went out to her.

“I’ve missed you.”

“Yeah, I haven’t felt well enough to get out of bed.”

“Why are you crying?” April asked, dropping a ginger tea bag into a mug.

“It’s nothing really. Pregnancy hormones.” Kelly took a bunch of tissues out of her pocket and dabbed at her nose.

After filling up the teakettle, April put it on the burner. “That should be ready in a few minutes. I’m going to have a cup of chai.”

“I love the smell of that.” Kelly gave a watery grin. “How are things going? Has Trent’s paperwork driven you crazy yet?”

“I’ve seen worse. I’m making headway. He’ll be all caught up for tax season and I can make sure that he’s prepared for next year as well.”

“That’s one less thing to worry about. Thank you.”

“It’s my job. How’s your photography studio coming along?”

“Great. I got asked to do the Last Stand High School senior portraits. That’s a big coup around here.” She smiled briefly. “It’s been a tough few years.”

“Are things going better for the ranch?” April asked.

“Last year was so crazy, most of our plans were stalled. But Janice’s retreat center has been booked solid for the last few months and Donovan is doing great, too. Emily is still keeping my dad in line while getting the wind turbines installed as soon as she can. It’s busy and I’m happy to be working with my family. But some days…” She blew out a sigh. “It’s too much.”

April nodded. “Us middle sisters have to stick together.”

“Exactly,” Kelly said, nodding.

Once the water in the kettle was boiling, April poured it into the two waiting mugs. She put them on the small table with sugar and milk. Kelly used one teaspoon of sugar and a splash of milk. April put in a glug of milk and a tablespoon of sugar.

“I’ve got a sweet tooth.” She shrugged.

“Me too. But I’m trying not to eat everything in sight. I want to, though. Anyway, thanks for the tea. I ducked in here because I didn’t want to hear Donovan argue with Janice anymore.”

“What are they arguing about?”

“Donovan’s dad is kind of a shady character. He’s renting Janice’s retreat this month for a group of ex-cons who have been just released from long prison terms.”

“Here?” April said, splashing her chai.

“Sorry,” Kelly said. “I shouldn’t have just dropped that on you. The ex-cons have been vetted.
