CHAPTER 10
âYou canât make this shit up,â Scotty said as they all laughed about his latest story. He was with the city police and one of the crew that often met to blow off steam and swap war stories. It was one of her favorite nights, one of her only nights out.
Then whyâd she feel so crappy?
Was it because Scotty was the one who had arrested Jesse? Or had it been the frustrated and hopeless look on Jesseâs face as sheâd driven away with Caleb?
She looked around. Their group of eight included her, Caleb, Scotty, four of the firemen he worked with, and another deputy she got along with. Two of the firemen were married, including the only other woman at the table. Max, the other deputy, was also married and twice all of their age, but he was well liked and had always treated her respectfully.
Caleb took a swig from his beer bottle. He was glaring at the door.
âUh-oh,â Farah murmured next to him. Brigit Walker had just walked in with her fiancé. When was Caleb going to get over her? Farah liked all the Walkers, but Brigit had always seemed less friendly and more a cold bitchâand the last person Farah expected Caleb to be hung up on.
Said the deputy whoâd woken up with an ex-convict this morning. Farah took a sip of her Coke. Itâs not as if hormones required a background check.
Brigitâs bright eyes skipped over their group, lingering on Caleb. She gave him a nod. It was acknowledgement of her brotherâs best friend, nothing more, but poor Caleb might read into it.
Caleb lifted a finger from his beer in a wave. âThat guy is a walking pile of lying shit,â he said quietly to Farah. Sheâd been his sounding board for his unrequited love for Brigit since high school. It wasnât like he could go to Justin Walker and bitch about his ice princess of a sister.
âBut heâs dressed for the part,â Farah remarked. Brigitâs mom had put the kibosh on Brigit dating Caleb, deeming him not good enough for her precious daughter when she shouldâve wept tears of joy that her daughter had fallen for a decent man with a good heart. The man Brigit had hooked up with might look the part, but he oozed seediness.
âFuck him.â Calebâs gaze dropped to the table. âAnd her, too.â
Scotty started in on another story and Caleb leaned in, but Farah would bet her next paycheck that he was still brooding about Brigit.
Poor guy. Farah had always been sympathetic before, but her understanding was suddenly much deeper. Sheâd liked waking up to a naked Jesse. Liked being by held by him while she slept. Liked hearing that he admired her dedication to her job when it was usually the deal breaker in her meet cutes.
Farah finished her soda and pushed back from the table. They didnât usually stay long past ten p.m., but she wouldnât last the rest of the hour without a bathroom break.
She swept into the bathroom.
