CHAPTER 22

The next morning Katherine caught sight of Crooked Brook’s orange farm truck in the parking lot at the feed store and couldn’t stop her pulse from quickening at the thought Trix may be inside it. She walked over, then noticed that the truck was backing with the trailer cocked off to the side, dangerously close to hitting the truck in the next spot over. She could only think of one person who could be driving that truck who wouldn’t be able to park a trailer. Her suspicions were confirmed when she heard Alex yell, “Goddamn it.” from inside the cab.

Katherine stepped in front of the truck and waited for Alex to look up. When she did, she muttered something to herself, then threw the truck into park, still half in, half out of a spot. Alex leaned out the window.

“Something I can help you with?” Alex asked with ice in her tone.

“Appears I’m not the one who needs a hand.”

“Yeah, yeah, everyone loves to get in a jab at the city girl. I need to pull forward. You can move, or I get to hit you with a truck.”

Katherine debated leaving her to her own devices, but this ridiculous girl was important to Trix, and Trix was important to Katherine. If there was even the smallest chance she could be with Trix, a truce was going to be necessary.

“I’m not poking fun. It can be hard. Can I help you?” Katherine offered.

Alex watched her with hard eyes. “Yes, fine,” she said between clenched teeth.

Katherine approached the driver’s side door and motioned for Alex to scoot over into the passenger seat. “I’m guessing before you left, Winn and Trix gave you some crap advice about parking, like: ‘You’ve got to feel where the trailer wants to go’?”

“They told me to 'become one with the trailer.'” Alex made air quotes with her fingers as she recalled the woefully unhelpful advice.

“Idiots,” Katherine said as she pulled the truck forward. “It’s physics, not magic. They want to pretend they have some mystical connection with all things machine, but, like almost everything they do, it’s simpler than they let on.”

Katherine put the truck in reverse. “You need to use the side view mirrors not the rearview. If you’re pulling a stock trailer instead of a flatbed, you won’t be able to see out the back. Step one, get lined up as straight as possible. That’s done going forward. Step two, back up and watch the trailer in the mirror. If the ass end goes the way you don’t want, pull forward and turn the wheel the other way when you start again. Make small moves, small corrections and go slow. It takes practice, but it’s not rocket science.” As she spoke, she looked out the window and rotated the wheel slightly back and forth a few times as she seamlessly backed the trailer and truck into the spot.

“Thanks for the tutorial,” Alex said, but couldn’t stop herself from adding, “If you think a small favor like this is going to change my mind about what you’re doing to Trix, you’re delusional.
