Chapter Eleven

“Sheriff Emory Rhodes!” Lilian bellowed as she stopped Kwen just outside of the station.

The few people milling about whirled to face her as she fired her shotgun in the air, eyes blazing. Shopkeepers emerged from their doors, peering at her from behind the front pillars of their porches.

“Get your yellow-bellied fuckin’ ass out here!” she screamed, her hair matted and wild around her head, forehead and cheeks still pink from the blaze casting high heat on her face.

The door to the station opened almost lazily, and Emory stepped out onto the porch, one boot after the other, a thumb hooked in behind his ridiculously huge belt buckle. He poked up with a finger to push his hat back a little on his head, regarding her with an amused gaze.

“This ain’t the way to spring your boy,” he drawled.

“I don’t give a fuck about him,” she snapped, pointing the gun at him. “You burned my fuckin’ house down. Killed my horse. You ain’t taken enough from me?!”

Emory blinked at her, proper confusion written all over his face, and he raised his palms. “Ma’am, I can honestly say I didn’t—”

“Don’t fuckin’ lie to me,” she interrupted, jutting out her chin as she aimed for his beak nose. “I know you didn’t do it, but you sure as hell had somebody do it.”

The moment stretched out between them, as if the onlookers were holding their breath. Even Kwen stood stock still, bearing her rider at full height. A crow squawked in the distance, and a slight breeze ghosted over Lilian’s sweltering cheeks.

“I did not,” Emory finally said, and lowered his hands ever-so-slowly. “Why don’t you come on inside and we’ll figure out who did? And get some men out there to put out the fire.”

“Why don’t you come out here?” She swung down from Kwen’s saddle, boots hitting the dirt with a satisfying thud.

The Sheriff smirked beneath his salt-and-pepper moustache. “You don’t wanna see your boy? Say a proper goodbye through the bars?”

Lilian ground her teeth together so hard they creaked inside of her skull. She didn’t want to see Davien. She didn’t know how to feel about what she’d learned, the evidence of course gone in the inferno. The latter of which was more important and pressing to her in the moment.

“I don’t want you to be able to hide your corrupt ass away in that buildin’,” she declared, spreading her arms. “You’ve been playin’ this town for long enough. If you’ll burn down the farm that belonged to my father, a man that served this town for—”

“I didn’t burn down your fuckin’ house!” Emory snarled, pointing a finger as he stepped down off of the porch. “Throwin’ accusations around like a child throwin’ a fuckin’ tantrum—”

“Oh, that’s rich, coming from you, you lyin’—”

“—if you just fuckin’ listen—”

“—terrorizin’ Finny and Abby like they’re toys to you—”

“—rapist shit of a farm hand—”

“—and then killin’ all my fuckin’ livestock, what the hell d’you think that’s gonna do?!” Lilian shrieked, and raised her shotgun, the duo now only a few feet apart in the middle of the road.
