CHAPTER ELEVEN

It was only a kiss.

That was what Wyatt told himself as Darlene let out a soft, urgent little moan, the sexiest sound he had ever heard in his life. He hadn't even known he was going to kiss her until his lips brushed against hers, tentatively for the fraction of a second it took for her to start kissing him back.

After that, it was full-throttle overdrive. Neither of them had time for the slow build, the teasing and testing and exploring that new couples often went through as they learned their way around each other.

The thing was, Wyatt was absolutely sure he wasn't missing anything.

He already knew her. One kiss was all it took to feel as if they'd been together for their entire lives. In the back of his mind, he knew he should figure out why that was, but this was not a moment for reflection.

Darlene kissed him back with everything she had. It wasn't arrogance that made Wyatt certain that she'd never experienced anything like this, either. Just as his eyes and ears delivered information he could trust, there was something in him that translated her passion, assuring him that she felt everything that he did.

And what he felt was that if he stopped kissing Darlene, he'd be lost.

Yeah, his cock was as hard as granite, but it went further than that. Somehow the savagery of the kiss—his hands twisted in her hair and her teeth nipping at his lips, the sounds they made more like snarling than sighs, were cover for something even more intimate.

They were a matching pair. Her scars were his scars. Both had been forged by unutterable horror, and for once in their lives, neither had to hide any part of themselves.

He and Darlene were like two castaways lost at sea for so long that when they finally found dry land, they clung to it with a ferocity that drove out everything else.

Wyatt knew he needed to let go of Darlene…but he couldn't, not yet. The attraction that had flickered between them after she woke from her nightmare had built into a raging inferno and needed to burn until only ash remained.

Darlene was a looker—anyone could see that. With her long pale hair and those blue, blue eyes, the tight jeans and hot pink lipstick, Wyatt bet she featured in a lot of late-night fantasies. But that wasn't what made him want to lay her down and lose himself inside her for a month.

No. What he couldn't pull away from was her heart hammering like a hummingbird's, her trembling hands clinging to his neck, her little tremulous gasps revealing the vulnerability she had tried so hard to hide until this moment. It was the trust she'd mustered, his delicate little bird, just to let him kiss her…and the powerful, razor-clawed raptor her passion threatened to release. It was the juxtaposition of the tough girl everyone else saw with the fragile, delicate soul that only he could see.

And once he'd seen it, Wyatt knew that he was the one who could give Darlene peace, who could make her pain go away.
