NINE

Pagan

This was the opportunity I’d been waiting for.

For so long, I’d dreamed of the chance to take on Duine, one on one, man to man, magic to magic, hoping to bring this damn war to an end. This was not the situation I would have chosen—we were on his home turf and Nyx’s life was at stake—but I would take it.

As I stepped forward, I saw Duine smile with realization.

“Pagan. Nice to finally meet you.”

I felt a fiery anger burn within my chest. “I can’t say the same.”

And the same tempest suddenly blew in his eyes as they narrowed into slits. The hatred he bore me easily outweighed my own towards him and that was a scary thing. “It would be worth losing that bitch Nyx just for the chance to kill you.”

“I’m glad you feel that way.”

“Oh, make no mistake… I won’t be losing her,” Duine clarified.

And at the thought of Nyx rotting away in one of Duine’s cells, I let loose a blast of concentrated power straight at him. It was almost everything I had, but I had to get him away from the door to Nyx’s cell.

It worked.

Duine’s guard hadn’t been on the alert as he enjoyed the back and forth between Duine and me, and when my blast hit Duine like a steam roller, there was nothing the guard could do. The blast took Duine off his feet and threw him back down the corridor. All the while, he turned and tumbled until he hit the wall with a satisfying crunch.

“Fucking hell,” muttered the usually well-spoken Laucian.

As the Samhain, led by Conal, rushed the guards, heading for Nyx’s cell, I grabbed Laucian’s arm. “Get her out, get them all out.”

The vampire nodded. “You have my word.”

I believed him.

I started down the corridor, where I could see the rubble in which Duine was buried starting to move. I didn’t know how much I had left to fight him with, but I had to keep him busy.

“Pagan.”

I felt Matherson’s massive hand on my shoulder and in the next instant, power flowed into me. His hand was joined by that of Eirin and the flow increased. They drained themselves of every last drop of magical energy they had to fuel me for the fight ahead. Bronwyn and Hoffman were quick to follow, as Conal carried Nyx out of the cell.

I caught her eye as she went past and she gave me a smirk that said Duine hadn’t destroyed her. She’d been through it, but she was alive. And she was still Nyx.

The rubble at the end of the corridor exploded as Duine erupted out, streaking down the corridor towards me like a rocket. With my new power, I summoned a barrier into the corridor, blocking his way. It bowed and strained, such was the tremendous power behind it, and equally tremendous anger of Duine.

I glanced back to see the rest of the rescue party making good their escape. We’d done well, but they weren’t out yet. Although they were
