Josh watched the news with a certain amount of satisfaction. No, he didn’t like that Holly had manipulated the whole Christmas idea to where he had no choice but to accept her challenge. But, to watch her discomfort when she found out she would be right there with him made it all worthwhile.

He took a sip of his drink. Tonight he had dinner plans with the Governor and his wife. No doubt there would be several other couples there, but Josh decided to go alone. Given a choice, he would have invited Holly, but he knew she’d only consider the request an insult. Besides, reporters weren’t necessarily welcomed as private guest.

Damn, how hardheaded could a woman be?

He’d just signed his tab and stood to exit the bar when a tall, good looking blond walked up to him and held a green sprig above his head. “Looks like you owe me a kiss, Senator.”

She smiled brightly and unless he’d lost the ability to read a come-on when he saw one, she wanted to hook up. He briefly thought about spending a little time with her upstairs in his room then taking her to the Governor’s, but flashes of Holly darted through his mind.

He wanted her a lot more than the blond and he wouldn’t settle for a substitute. He wanted the real thing. And that meant Holly. Right now, he wanted her company. Shaking his head, Josh wondered where that thought came from. Those kinds of emotions damn near scared him to realize he desired a woman that bad.

Josh tossed out his brightest smile and shook his head. “Sorry, I’m not available tonight.”

She blinked several times. “Oh, I thought you were the most eligible bachelor on Capitol Hill.”

“Single, but off the market.”

He strolled out of the bar and hoped the stranger hadn’t been offended. No politician considered mid-terms a good time to piss off voters. Still, he didn’t feel like hooking up with someone he didn’t know.

Just as he reached the elevator, his phone rang and he quickly answered it. “Yes?”

His secretary occupied the other end. “I sent the newspaper and the local television stations your statement.”

“Okay, let’s sit back and see what happens.”

“I made sure everything you put down was doable. I didn’t want us to get into an embarrassing situation. Wouldn’t look good if you showed up at an event and they weren’t expecting you.”

“That sounds good.”

“And it appears Miss Morgan does volunteer at all the venues. She’s one busy lady.”

“That’s exactly what we want.”

Steven cleared his throat. “I don’t want to say anything rude, but you know this could be the best political move you’ve ever made.”

Josh couldn’t believe his ears. Doing this had nothing to do with furthering his ambitions. It was all about Holly. “I don’t think I understand.”

Steven laughed. “It’s the magical season, sir. Everyone’s happy spending money. Dreams come true and you’ll be seen doing cheerful things for the underprivileged. Best publicity stunt there is.”

“You know, this isn’t a way to get more votes. It’s about teaching a little lady a lesson.
