Chapter 10
OTHER KEY CRAFT STUFF
How to Get It Crisp, Styled, and Polished
We all learn by imitating. A child learns to walk by following her parents’ example. A writer learns to write by reading other writers.
Alas, you can know the difference between that and which, you can use active verbs, check your spelling carefully, and a hundred other things and still not write well.
We are talking here about style, heart, and passion.
We are talking about orchestration.
We are talking about the difference between the adequate and the superb.
Oddly, some people will tell you that merely competent writing is okay for development work. Oh, you writers! Always getting hung up on the words! As if polished writing ever won anybody funding.
Let’s reiterate: Polished writing does not get projects funded. Rather, it helps ensure that your project gets considered and then, we hope, on its merits, gets funded. Have you ever sat on the receiving end of a flow of written material? Résumés? Manuscripts? Award entries? It’s hard to make choices, isn’t it? How do you discriminate between the pieces you receive? If you are going to win-now a pile down, will you eliminate pieces that don’t look and read well? Pieces that are boring? Pieces that seem thrown together and lack both substance and style?
How about the proposal or brochure that grabs you by the collar and won’t let go. Which pile are you going to put that in?
We are here to say we want all of your proposals and other pieces in the “A” pile, where the thoughtful, convincing, winning stuff goes.
Enough said?
