Alexander wanted to spend the afternoon on the river, but with Edgar gone and Edgaren’t taking his place, Alexander didn’t really want to run into the large, mean man and his large, mean mustache. Just in case he decided to ask about whether Alexander and Theo were the type of kids who willingly went to libraries.

They headed to the slides, keeping an eye out for Wil. Alexander obviously wasn’t going to go down any, but after overhearing Mrs. Widow arguing with Edgar about contracts, he was curious and wanted to sneakily question other employees. He’d start with the raft stand attendant.

But…no one was there. Not only were they the only guests in the park, it was looking like they would soon be the only people, period. Theo hopped the counter and grabbed a raft for herself while Alexander nervously looked over his shoulder, waiting to get in trouble.

“I wonder where the attendant is. Maybe it’s because of the rain,” Alexander said. “Or it’s everyone’s day off.”

“Or maybe she was running…” Theo tried to make it sound like a joke, but the words hung heavy in the air between them. Theo cleared her throat and looked up. “Wait, is that Wil?” She pointed at the first slide.

“Are you trying to trick me into going up?” Alexander asked.

“No, it really is her. Come on.” Theo hurried, and Alexander reluctantly followed. He didn’t want to climb the tower, but he also didn’t want to be alone at the bottom of the slides, just in case Mrs. Widow or Edgaren’t came by.

And Theo had been right. Wil was at the first slide, leaning close in conversation with one of the seven identical lifeguards. Theo grinned at her and waved.

“Hey, Wil,” Alexander said.

Wil looked over at them, a frown furrowing her brow. It was a look of concentration she usually only saved for her phone. “Have you two seen Edgar?”

“We’ve seen Edgaren’t,” Theo said.

“Not-Edgar,” Alexander clarified. “Some scary man insisting he’s always been here and that he’s Edgar.”

Wil turned to the pale girl. “Charlotte, is there anyone else we can talk to about it? Edgar was acting so strange yesterday afternoon.”

“Everything has been strange,” Charlotte said, squeezing the handle of her parasol with bloodless hands. “If they have their way, we’ll have to go. I don’t want to go.”

“So don’t,” Theo said with a shrug. She set down her raft and entered Oblivion.

“What do you mean, if they have their way you’ll have to go?” Alexander asked. Charlotte seemed very upset, and he didn’t want to upset her more, but he needed to interview more employees if he was going to be a good detective. Even though he wasn’t feeling good at detective work, or anything else, for that matter.

“We can only stay where we’re wanted,” Charlotte said. “We’ve been welcome here for so long. But now I’m afraid.”

“Is this about the new contracts?” Alexander asked. “Is Mrs. Widow trying to fire you? Is that where the other employees went? Do you think she fired
