Wrench

An unfamiliar, newer model rental car, complete with dark tinted windows, sits in Hayden’s driveway. And at the front door, Hayden stands, watching me alongside an unfamiliar, well-dressed man. I can’t help but narrow my eyes at how relaxed they seem to be with each other.

I look him over as I walk up to the porch. While the suit screams city boy, he’s not a slender man. Broad shoulders suggest he works out regularly.

“Eric, this is Wrench, a friend of mine. Wrench, this is my ex-brother-in-law, Eric.” Hayden makes the introductions as I reach out to shake his hand. Expecting to see derision on his face for being a biker, I’m surprised when he willingly shakes my hand with a smile.

“It’s nice to meet you. I’m glad Hayden has found some new friends in the area.” He turns back to Hayden. “I’m staying at a cabin on the other side of town for the next few days. It would be good to visit with you and Hanley before I leave, if that is alright?”

“You’re staying at Wolf’s Ridge?” I ask, making a note to check on the background information that would be in the clubhouse files. Timber checks out everyone thoroughly before renting out the cabins.

“I am. Although it was short notice, they were very accommodating. They even had a rental car waiting for me at the airport. I wish other places had such good customer service.”

“We aim to please.” I smile at the praise for my club, pointing to the emblem on my cut.

“Ah, your club owns the cabins, then? The woman that helped me was Mina. Very sweet woman.”

“I don’t know about sweet, but I’ll let the Prez know you thought so of his wife.” I chuckle at his description of Mina. I’m not saying she isn’t sweet, but that girl can be downright ruthless when the need arises.

“I’m sorry we already had plans for tonight,” Hayden tells him.

“He could go with us.” I throw out the invitation, surprising both of them and myself. “He can follow us out there.”

“I wouldn’t want to intrude.” His eyes dart between us.

“No intrusion at all. It's just a local bar we all go to. There’s a live band tonight. It’ll give you a chance to talk with Hayden.” I was really hoping I wouldn’t have to share Hayden too much tonight, but the manners my mom instilled in me insist on inviting him along.

“Sounds like fun. I rarely have time for that these days.”
