We drove in silence for the rest of the ride.

Every once in a while, I felt Jace’s eyes on me, concern laced within them, but I didn’t care. He completely shut me out, dismissed my feelings as though they were nothing. I knew he was right; getting involved was risky. It came with consequences. But I couldn’t get his touch out of my head.

It felt right to be kissed by him.

Last night, his touch scorched my skin, leaving behind soft tingles that ran down the base of my spine and had me seeing stars. My body remembered the feeling, remembered the high, and wanted more. But it had to deal with the disappointment. Since Jace made it clear he would never touch me again.

I exhaled and stared out the window. A large billboard caught my eye in passing, my eyes widening. It was an advertisement for a zoo two miles ahead. A huge smile formed on my lips, and I snapped my head in Jace’s direction. I didn’t care that I was still mad at him. I wanted to go.

“I want to go to the zoo up ahead.”

He glanced at me, his face devoid of emotion, and nodded.

Jace took the next exit, following the road until we pulled into the parking lot of the zoo. A sea of bodies covered every inch of the parking lot, making it hard to find a space to park. We found a spot farther back and hopped out. A mass of people moved with us in the entrance's direction; parents holding their children’s hands between them with happy smiles on their faces. It was a sight where you couldn’t help but smile, too.

If I was going to enjoy the zoo, I needed to put aside my annoyance for Jace at the moment. I stopped, turning to face him. He flinched, staring at me curiously.

“While we’re here, no more awkward silence. Just talk with me like you normally do.”

We both knew damn well that was easier said than done.

“Okay,” he said and offered his hand to me.

I stared at it, my mind trying to catch up with my racing heart. I knew it was a peace offering for the time being, but touching him would only confuse me more. I didn’t care, though. I slipped my hand in his and we strode toward the front.

He paid for our tickets once we reached the admission booth. The woman handed us maps of the park and waved us on our way. Excitement ran through me as the smell of popcorn and nature filled by my nose. I smiled up at Jace, his eyes already on me. My stomach clenched at the way his eyes softened whenever he looked at me, as though I was something precious.

I dismissed the thought from my head. I wouldn’t think about any of that right now. No, while we were here, we would pretend yesterday never happened and enjoy ourselves.

I pulled Jace along, stopping at every exhibit. We let the hours run past us, talking and laughing, until we both settled near the barn.
