“What was that?” Griff jerked his head back toward the rapidly disappearing house.

“What was what?”

“At the end. You sounded almost… I don’t know. Warm. I know you. That wasn’t a fake, you-get-more-flies-with-honey-so-you’re-gonna-grit-your-teeth-and-play-nice-with-your-nemesis tone. What changed back there?”

Sam shrugged. “Honestly, I feel sorry for her.”

Had she somehow sustained a head injury when he wasn’t looking? “You feel sorry for her? The woman who made it her mission in life to make yours a living hell all through high school, who spent the weekend taking potshots at you? Why on earth would you feel sorry for her?”

She rolled her head toward him on the seat. “Because she doesn’t have you. She might have ended up with money and presumably the status that goes with it, but she doesn’t have a husband who looks at her the way you look at me. She’s in marriage counseling and on a hefty dose of anti-anxiety and blood pressure meds. I’m not saying her choice to take her misery out on others is acceptable, but I feel sorry for her. She’s spent her life chasing the wrong thing, and the price she’s paying to keep it is steep.”

Griff absorbed that as he navigated back to the highway. One of the things that had always drawn him to Sam was her sweetness. Her willingness to see the best in people. She had such a big heart. At length, he reached out to curl his fingers through hers, bringing her slim hand to his lips. “Your capacity for forgiveness astounds me.”

She snorted. “Oh, don’t mistake me. I haven’t forgiven her for the things she’s done to me. She’s still a heinous hellbeast. But it seems like karma is properly in action, so I’m letting the rest of it go.”

“And that’s enough for you?”

“It seems to me it matters more where you end up than where you started. I’m the one back in your bed. That’s a silent revenge that’s more than enough for me.”

He smirked. “Not so silent.”

Her unapologetic laugh eased the last of the strain from her face. “Yeah, well, whose fault is that?”

“Am I supposed to apologize for taking great satisfaction in making you scream?”

“God, I hope not. I’d love it if you’d repeat the performance at the earliest opportunity.”

Hell yes.

He made an exaggerated survey of their surroundings. “There are no convenient pull-offs, so we should find the nearest hotel.”

Her giggle echoed in the car. “Be serious.”

“You think I’m kidding?” He could too easily imagine finding a private spot and dragging her out of that seat so she could straddle him in his. The idea of it had his zipper straining.

“We need to strategize what’s next. You’ve been a great sport about all this so far, but even I concede this reactive approach I’ve had isn’t effective. Atlanta may be next, but we need to figure out what we’re going to do there. It’s too huge a place to go at it all scattershot.”

Sobering, he switched gears to the practical. “It’s too late to head for Atlanta from here.
