“Don’t you dare turn anyone away who comes to visit.” Brooke was halfway up the steps to the bedroom, where drill-sergeant Trish had ordered her to go.

Ignoring the comment, Trish warned, “I’ll be peeking in every hour to see how you’re doing.”

“Don’t you have a baby to feed?”

Trish laughed. “Nathan’s bringing him over for that. Now get some rest.”

Churlish, she knew, Brooke headed to her bedroom. She laid down on the bed and shivered, so she got up and opened a window, ignoring the fact the air conditioning blazed in the house.

She breathed in the warm weather. What a morning. She had a flash of the impact when her car was slammed into. How she was pinned and immobile because of the seatbelt and the airbag, which had deployed. Quelling the sensations, she went to the dresser, donned pink terry cloth bottoms and a top, sometimes used as pajamas. Now, she could relax. She lay back down.

An hour later, she heard Nathan Mitchell downstairs. He’d come to bring A.J. to nurse. She heard him talk to Trish then he appeared in her doorway. “Hey, how you doing?”

“I got a little headache and I’m sore. I broke down and took ibuprofen.”

“You’re pale. Have you slept?”

“Some.”

“I won’t keep you. All right if I spend some time here with my honey?”

“Nathan, take her home.”

“Nope. Your friends are concerned. She’s here for a few hours to help out, then somebody else takes over.”

“I guess I shouldn’t be alone.”

“We’ll stay until four. Call out if you need anything.”

“I will.”

Trish appeared next to him at the door, carrying a huge bouquet of roses and Godiva chocolate. “They’re from Stoney.”

Brooke laughed as Trish set them down. “How sweet.”

After they left, she was surprised that she was still tired, so she closed her eyes.

She awoke. The bedroom was in shadows, like late afternoon. Unconsciously she took in a deep breath. It didn’t hurt. Nor did her head. Maybe she should move around.

The world spun as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed and tried to stand. “Damn.” She dropped back down, slid over to the headboard and stuffed pillows behind her. Grabbing the remote, she clicked into the news. But her mind drifted to Cord. He’d been so solicitous of her. She could see the worry on his face. She tried to banish the images, but she couldn’t right away.

In her peripheral vision she caught sight of someone in the doorway. JJ. “Hey, girl.”

“Hey.” Brooke smiled. “Been here long?”

“Trish went home at four. I’m on duty till 7, when Tess and David come. Lynne and Annie will also take their turns.”

“If I had a say in this, I wouldn’t have agreed.”

“Which is exactly why you didn’t get one. Besides, Nick’s here so I have company, too.” She edged onto the chair. “What a fluky thing to happen.”

“Yeah.”

“You didn’t need this.”

“Would anybody?”

“No, but I mean first with Zach dying and now with Cord showing up in your life. You’ve had enough to deal with the past year.
