Jon Marcus had just finished his first run of the day and wanted to check on the boy whose aunt had passed last week. He knew he was at the hospital because Martinez had told him what had happened. As soon as he’d come in that morning for his shift, Martinez and Issac filled him in on what Detective Roberts had told Martinez when he’d gone to ask questions Sunday night about the women who’d been burned to death. The detectives were running full bore with the case because it was a nasty homicide and not the first one they’d had like that in the last month.

Trying not to think of the gruesome details of what he and Martinez had witnessed with that poor woman, he made his way around to the main entrance of the hospital. He decided it would be better to go in that way instead of trying to talk his way through the Emergency Room. As he rounded the information desk, he saw an older man’s feet get caught up in his walker and stumble, trying to get into a hospital wheelchair. He rushed over and caught the older male just before he fell sideways.

“Whoa, I’ve got you,” Jon Marcus said as he helped him get back into the blue seat of the wheelchair. Then he bent down, set the feet pads up, and gently placed one foot on each metal footrest. “Can I take you somewhere?”

“No, but thank you. My son will be right back. He just ran to get me water, and I was too impatient to wait,” the old man gave him a wry chuckle as his face turned beet red from obvious embarrassment.

Jon Marcus bent down and focused on the man’s face until their eyes locked. “You know, I fell sideways just getting out of bed the other day. Landed face-first onto my floor. We all have our moments.”

The old man smiled at him, a handsome lopsided grin brightening his whole face.

“Dad?” A guy about his age that truly looked like a younger version of the man in the chair came jogging toward them. “Dad, are you alright?” He grasped the old man’s hand and looked down at his father with such warmth. Jon Marcus couldn’t help the smile that covered his mouth. It was moments like this that reminded him that there was still goodness left in this world.

“I’m fine, son. Really.” His son smiled quietly at his dad and then glanced over at him. “Thank you.”

“No problem.” Jon Marcus shoved his hands into the front pockets of his pants. “Have a good day, you two.”

“Will do,” the older man said, and Jon Marcus headed off toward the main elevator. Turning the corner to the right, he felt someone slam into him so hard that he fell backward with the person still on top of him. Cracking his head on the floor, he groaned as he opened his eyes to see the angelic face of the female with the purple eyes less than an inch from his mouth.
