Chapter Fourteen – Kelli

“Is this real?” Kelli asked Asher as they walked back down the mountain, with a grumbling leprechaun and a fairy who buzzed around like a mosquito out of season. It was freezing cold, as the little man kept telling them, and the snow underfoot made the going hard.

“My ears wish it wasn’t,” Asher said, trying to make light of it.

“He’s never going to get down off this mountain, not on foot,” Kelli said. “And we need to get moving.”

“I could carry him.” Asher suggested.

“I have a better idea,” she said.

“Which I’m not going to like,” he said, reading her expression. “Oh. You have to be joking.”

“The quicker we get down the better.” Kelli stopped, and grinned at him. “And if this isn’t real, it doesn’t matter, right?”

“Real? Tell me feet it isn’t real,” the leprechaun said. “De snow has gone trou’ me boots, I’m cold, and I wish I was still back in the cave, because at least I was warm.”

“Not exactly how you go about rescuing your friends though, is it? Holed up in a cave is not going to get them back,” Asher said, and the fairy buzzed around his head. Asher gritted his teeth as he fought the urge to swat her away. “It’s the truth.”

“You could be nice,” the high-pitched voice said.

“Nice? I’m still not convinced this is real. So being nice is not at the top of my priorities right now,” Asher said. “Especially since the only way to speed this up is for me to carry you.”

“Carry me?” The leprechaun didn’t look too impressed either at the idea.

“More like ride him,” Kelli said. “We’re going to move quicker if we shift into our animals. And you’ll be safe on Asher.”

“You want me to ride a bear?” the leprechaun said. Asher was about to open his mouth to try to get the little man to do as they asked, when his face brightened. “Sure. I’ll do it. Wasn’t on me bucket list, but why not?”

Kelli smiled to herself, but stopped herself from asking what else a leprechaun had on his bucket list. She could only imagine.

“Glad to see you taking this seriously,” Asher said.

“Sorry.” She straightened her face; it was difficult, but she managed it. “OK, how do we do this?” Kelli asked.

“I’ll go bear, and you can lift the little guy on. I’ll take it slow, and he’ll have to hold on tight,” Asher said.

“OK,” Kelli agreed.

“Little guy? I have a name you know?” the leprechaun blurted out.

“Sorry, of course,” Kelli said. It should have been the first thing she asked him. Details, that was her job. But seeing a leprechaun and a fairy, that kind of put you off your game. “I’m Kelli Hellinger.”

“Asher Hunt,” her mate said politely, with a slight incline of his head.

“Don’t overdo it,” Kelli said to him, with a push on his shoulder. He looked up, humor dancing in his eyes. “I know, it’s unbelievable, but let’s pretend this is real.”

“Pretend. There’s nothing to pretend,” the leprechaun said.
