Amira

I was pissed.

Susan never showed up. Didn’t even call to cancel her appointment.

Right before shutting down my laptop and heading off to court, I received an email from her.

“False alarm. Mr. Goatnuts had Melanie dropped off at my apartment this morning with papers transferring custody back to me. We won! It’s a miracle.”

What the hell?

I read her email three times, the words not quite registering because of the nonsensical nature of the whole thing. Glancing at the clock, I realized I had just enough time to leave a voicemail and hope she called back with more details on whatever the heck had happened.

It was highly unlikely what she said was kosher. I mean, why would her gloating ex-husband just drop Melanie off with her mother? And how did he get papers transferring custody that quickly?

I grabbed my jacket and stuffed my briefcase with the last few papers necessary for my next hearing before heading out the door. Hopefully, my ride would get here soon. This day needed to end so I could get to Maine.

My heart wasn’t in it. I just wanted to be with Florebelle. Never the most intuitive of our trio, I still knew something big was brewing and that my presence was required, not optional.

Stupid adulting. Stupid partnership. I’d probably call in sick if it weren’t for them dangling that carrot in front of me.

“Hey, Susan. This is Amira Rapaport from Bankton, Rockman, Hughes, and Wins. Just wanted to get some clarification on your email. Are you saying your ex-husband returned Melanie to you with paperwork showing transfer of custody?”

I waved at the car heading toward me, which matched the rideshare app description. “Call me back so I can make sure everything’s in order. Talk to you soon.”

This afternoon was going to be a colossal pain in the ass. I wanted to head straight to the airport after work and catch a flight.

Why the hell hasn’t Star called me yet? Is she in trouble too?

Once the car door closed and the seat belt lock clicked, the emotional part of my brain turned off and I went into work mode.

That click made all the distractions of mood and personal problems fade away. I focused on the case at hand. Your standard divorce fare. The husband violated the prenup and would have to give his soon-to-be ex-wife her fair share. He didn’t even attempt to fight it. That meant one of two things. Either he was still hoping beyond hope that by not being an argumentative cuss, he’d win her back in the end, or what she didn’t know about was far, far worse than what he’d done and he was afraid of the truth getting out.

As far as the getting-back-together scenario was concerned—fat chance. In my experience, when the wife was the one to end it, they rarely gave their exes a second chance.
