“What does that mean?” Liam asked.

“You still can’t change a cat. But what if you could clone it?” Bea smiled as if she’d said something that actually made sense.

“What does that mean?” Liam finally asked again.

“Time slime lets you branch off history into a new timeline. So instead of changing history, you’re creating an alternate history.”

Liam blinked. “What does that . . .”

“Look, I know it’s confusing,” Bea interrupted. “What matters is that time slime saved the world. Leaders used the first little bit to fix all their mistakes. Then, there was a lot of fighting over who’d get to use the next little bit. By the time we were down to our final little bit . . .” Bea switched to a chipper voice. “Sir! Could I interest you in a free pickle charm at the Heinz display?”

An old man who’d been staring at the kids harrumphed and limped away.

“By the time we were down to our final little bit—well—things had gotten almost as bad as they’d been when we’d started. Scientists spent quadrillions of dollars to copy the time slime, but they couldn’t do it. There had to be more out there somewhere. People got desperate. They began chasing wild theories.”

“Like what?” Liam asked.
