More state-of-the-art electronics appeared in two parallel sets of demagnetization cables strung along the submarine's gunwales from the stern to the bow planes. They dissipated static charges building up as the hulls sliced through water, preventing the steel from otherwise gradual deterioration.

The super subs were not merely maritime airstrips, but exceptionally powerful warships in their own right. Each hanger was defended top-side by three, Type 96, triple-mounted, 25 mm cannons, two abaft the conning tower and one forward, with a single 25 mm on a pedestal positioned just abaft the bridge. A 5.5-inch, Type 11 deck gun --- larger than any carried by destroyers --- mounted aft of the hangar had a range of forty-nine thousand feet, more than 1.6 miles, making it one of the most powerful artillery pieces ever fitted to a Second World War submarine. The bow featured eight torpedo tubes but none aft, for a total compliment of twenty-eight torpedoes.
