Conclusion

This has been but a brief summary of some of the larger tank battles of WWII. Though there were certainly other armored battles in the war, many of them were fought on a smaller scale than what has been discussed here. That does not mean, however, that they were not influential.

In 1943, the Americans fought against Rommel and the Germans in North Africa for the first time at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia and were soundly defeated. This resulted in them gaining valuable experience and a new commanding officer – George S. Patton.

In 1944, British, Canadian, and German tanks clashed outside of Caen in Normandy. Hundreds of British and Canadian tanks were destroyed by a comparative handful of Tigers and Panthers.

In late 1944, Shermans commanded by US Lt. Colonel Creighton Abrams (who later became US Army Chief of Staff, and had the M1 “Abrams” tank named in his honor) led an armored spearhead which broke through the ring of German troops around Bastogne in Belgium and relieved the surrounded 101st Airborne Division.

WWII changed warfare forever, and the use of the tank was part of that change. Though most countries do not have the masses of armor that were present in WWII, the presence of tanks on the battlefield can still change the course of events.

We hope that you have enjoyed this brief summary of some of the major tank battles of WWII. We hope that it has inspired you to dig deeper into the study of WWII and military history for more information on this influential period of time.
