The Scaligerian construction of the building of Rome is a flimsy construction indeed. These examples are endless. And yet, when scholars quote or refer to experts, it is often with 'Josephus has said...' [31]
Again the question of why so sloppy? Another recent researcher called Momsen, noted that, in fact, the Fall of Troy happened just before the birth of Rome. Scaliger puts 500 years between the two. By and large the history of Rome is based on the works of Titus Livy (born around 59 BC). His first works surfaced about 1469 and were based on a manuscript of unknown origin currently lost. “...the numerical (lies) until (now)...the '500 years' that were arbitrarily placed between the fall of Troy and the building of Rome, phantoms though they were, have been filled with a list of ghostly rulers, just like the ones that were widely used by the chronologists of Egypt and Greece...apparently this is the one that brought the 'kings' Aventinius and Tiberinus as well as the Albian clans of the Sylvians, into existance. Their descendants did not miss their opportunity to invent first names and periods of reigning – they even painted portraits for better representation.” [32]
Fomenko especially addressed the idea of these so-called 'Phantom Dynasties.' He invented a table, as he did with map comparisons, with the skills he had as a statistician, called a Form Code. A Form Code applied to a chronicle means it can be examined despite any questionable assessments of the chronicler. This Form Code contained 34 items, detailed information about the ruler in question. Gender, life span, duration of reign, cause of death, any wars or natural disasters assumed to have happened during the time, and so forth were on the table. Fomenko applied this over time to several hundred ancient rulers. Individuals could be compared as well as entire dynasties.
We can compare say, two dynasties. From each we can choose, for example, twenty profile codes of kings who ruled in succession. Fomenko called this a 'flow of form codes.' He compared the first ruler of one dynasty with the first ruler of the other dynasty and so on through time. Many such biographies are very similar so so a few matches would be expected. To compare similar dynasties, Fomenko developed a special factor. If the two dynasties graphed by the factors are virtually identical...and many of them are...then we can reasonably assume we are looking at the same dynasty. Some fairly shocking examples of these can be started with the rule of Jeroboam in the Kingdom of Israel and the rule of Constantine I. In other words, these were likely the same ruler in the same dynasty, not separate rulers in different places. The Kingdom of Judah and the Wedstern Roman Empire would have been the same thing. Charlemagne and Constantine III would have been the same person. Henry II and Diocletian would have been the same person. Charles V and Barbarossa would have been the same person. You get the picture.
