Chapter Twelve

MJ watched her daughter as she roller-skated with panache. “Last year, she worked like a demon for three weeks, falling on her bottom and getting scrapes and cuts, and then suddenly she was like a swan, all grace and speed. It took her a while to learn all these complicated maneuvers, but look at her now.”

Dylan leaned on the railing, his eyes following Sadie as she executed a perfect crossover turn. “She’s good.”

MJ put her hand on his. “I want to thank you for including her. It was sweet of you to offer for her to come along.”

Dylan turned to face her. He adjusted her cap. “Oh, yeah! It’s a real hardship to enjoy the company of two beautiful women. Sadie’s a delight, Marcelle. I like talking to her. She’s fun.”

How she’d once longed to hear her ex-husband say these words! Dylan had so easily formed a bond with Sadie; whereas, her ex-husband, Sadie’s father, couldn’t bear to exchange two sentences with her.

“I love her. She’s the light of my life.” MJ’s heart flipped as Sadie whizzed by at top speed, nearly colliding with another skater. At the last minute, both skaters swerved and crisis was averted. “But I know my daughter. Sometimes she just spouts stuff she shouldn’t, especially when she gets into one of her moods.”

“Every teenager is entitled to a respectable mood swing.” Dylan waved at Sadie as she glided by on one foot.

“You’re determined to make it easy, aren’t you?”

“And you’re determined to make it hard, aren’t you?” He matched her tone and voice.

She brushed her hand across his arm. “Sooner or later you’re going to want to be with someone who’s closer to your age, someone who’s not saddled with the responsibility of a teenager…”

“Not that same old ring tone, again, Marcelle. Spare me!” He buried his face in his hands. “Please, I beg you.”

Despite herself, she laughed. “Stop it. You’re so silly, sometimes.”

“But you love me anyway.” He butted his body against hers.

“Hmm!” she said noncommittally, as the word “love” sent a sliver of panic up her spine. Perhaps, he found it easy to throw such powerful words in her direction but it wasn’t as easy for her. Love was a four-letter word, a dangerous word—and a word that carried meaning and embodied commitment. Once she’d believed love could be simple, but now she knew better. It was fraught with complications and problems, and more often than not, led to disappointment.

He ran a finger down her cheek. “So are you going to tell me about your marriage? Your ex-husband?”

Was she ready to talk about it? She hadn’t really relived those memories with anyone. Never needed to. It was enough that she’d left, escaped with her daughter, and made a new life for herself. Telling someone would recapture those moments. But perhaps, she could talk to Dylan. At least, she could try.

“Rod was…handsome, charming, and suave. He just swept me off my feet. We were both young, naïve, and very much in love,” she began.
