HI-SEAS (hahy-SEEZ), noun
HI-SEAS is a NASA program that is studying how to feed a future human colony on Mars. It hopes to determine the nutritional parameters needed for such a civilization as well as work out some of the necessary resources and energy requirements while still on Earth so that astronauts can prepare and plan well before such a space mission occurs. HI-SEAS stands for Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation. This year, six astronauts from the HI-SEAS program will travel to a volcanic mountain in Hawaii, which will serve as a simulated Martian habitat for 120 days. The astronauts will spend their time utilizing only dehydrated and shelf-stable foods, such as freeze-dried cheese, beef, and chicken, as well as dehydrated fruits and vegetables. Another goal of the HI-SEAS project is to figure out a way to craft delicious meals using these products under the imposed restraints. The idea is that creating cuisine that is elevated beyond simple âspace foodâ would serve as a link back to Earthbound society in an isolating, sensory-deprived environment like Mars. The team also hopes to address the reduced sense of smellâwhich affects the sense of tasteâthat confined astronauts encounter in places like the International Space Station. Some believe that this is a physiological coping mechanism of being cooped up amid the strong body odor that can occur. The simulation is expected to kickoff early this year.
