Like many modern teenagers at some stage in their development, Jacqueline was dissatisfied with her name, and was experimenting with others. She signed the letter “Jessie” and asked her father to direct his letters to “J-W. Watie.”

Stand Watie’s reply a few days later, as these excerpted lines indicate, was comparable to that of any modern father writing to a daughter away in school:

Grand River, At Old Place

May 10th 1871

My dear daughter:

Your most affectionate and loving letter has reached me. I am happy and delighted to hear from you. You cant imagine how lonely I am up here at our old place without any of my dear children being with. I would be so happy to have you here, but you must go to school. I am glad you are pleased and like the school and your teacher. I am well acquainted with Capt., Clarke he is a fine man…I must try to come to Berryville at the examination. I shall do my utmost to send you back again next term…I will try to send the money you require…

Your affectionate father
