Still Graduation Day…

Damon’s arrival startled Natalia to the core.

She hadn’t realized that her brother was coming for the graduation and there was a moment of bitter sweetness seeing him there. She knew that matters between Damon and her parents had been turbulent and she had assumed that the animus would spill onto her. She wasn’t sure if she was happy to see him or not at first. Damon was in a terrible mood when her roommate announced a visitor. She had heard the phone ringing earlier, but no one had bothered to answer it, everyone consumed with their own issues as they prepared for one of the most important days of their lives. She wasn’t even sure where her cell phone was anymore, the device lost in the hustle of the day.

Natalia’s house was in chaos, even though it was only a quarter to ten and they still had two hours to get to graduation. People Natalia didn’t know milled about, the house in shambles as pictures flashed, and she tried to remain inconspicuous in the hubbub.

She had already showered, using the last of the hot water, and she gaped at her brother from the landing.

“Damon!” she cried in disbelief. “W-what are you doing here?”

“Not happy to see me?” he asked, barely smiling, and Natalia felt a familiar knot form in her gut.

He’s upset. He’s here and he’s in a bad mood. I don’t need this right now.

“How did you get here? When did you get in?” she asked, hurrying down the steps to greet him. “Where’s Elena?”

His face darkened even more, and Natalia had her answer.

“Never mind,” she told him, ushering him inside hastily. “Come in the kitchen. There’s coffee on.”

She sat him at the scarred table as her housemates flittered through and greeted them brightly. The excitement was tangible, but Natalia found her good spirits slipping away as she studied her brother’s face.

“Are you dating Harry Laurier?” he asked bluntly, and her shoulders instantly touched her ears in defensiveness. It was not a question she had been expecting and for a moment, she could only gape at him.

“W-what?” she choked. “Who told you that?”

“Are you?”

“Of course not!” she denied and a flash of guilt accompanied the words.

Damon doesn’t need to know that I’ve been thinking about him nonstop since our night together. How does Damon know anything at all?

She debated asking him but wisely kept her mouth clamped shut as Damon grunted.

“Good. That entire family is the devil. I can’t believe that Harry is going to be the Alpha one day, but then again, he’s not that much different than Hector, is he?”

The question was rhetorical, but Natalia wanted nothing more than to change the subject, certain that her face was pink with embarrassment.

“Damon, I really need to get ready,” she told him. “Can I leave you here while I finish?”

He looked at her, shame coloring his eyes as if he realized what his unexpected arrival had done to shake up her plans.

“Yeah, of course,” he muttered. “Sorry, Nat.
