CHAPTER 9

CASEY

“Tell me what’s going on!”

Jake grumbled to himself as he led Casey through the pack grounds. He glanced around—the place was still a mess from the attack, no one having bothered to clean up. Broken branches were everywhere, many of the windows of the cabins smashed. Plenty of work would need to be done to get the place up to speed.

But all of that would have to wait. They had more pressing matters to attend to.

“Come on—it’s better if I show you in person.”

“You could tell me something,” said Casey. “Anything.”

She looked over Jake as they moved. She could tell that part of him was glad to have her help in running the pack. But she felt the more time he spent with her, the more he remembered that she was always the headstrong type, the kind of woman who wasn’t content to sit on the sidelines and wait for the men to tell her what to do.

She was an omega, but one that would need to be tamed. “It’s the supplies,” he said. “Any of you bother to check on them after the attack?”

Casey said nothing as they continued on. “N...no.”

“Well, that’s what it’s about. The situation’s bad. You’ll see for yourself.”

The two of them kept on, making their way to the wooden warehouse where the supplies for the pack were kept. As they approached, Jake laid eyes on the smashed-through front doors to the place.

“Holy shit,” said Casey. “Who did that?”

“One of the packs that attacked. Might’ve been during the attack itself, or maybe they came in for a quick raid while you all were still distracted.”

They eventually reached the broken doors. Jake stopped, and Casey formed up at his side. He watched the color drain out of her face as she took in the sight.

“Holy...shit,” she said.

It was bad, just like he’d said. The supplies—mostly food, but medical gear as well—were totally trashed. Bags of food were ripped open, medical kits stomped and broken. It was a total catastrophe.

“That’s not the worst part,” said Jake. “Go inside.”

Casey took a step into the barn, her face twisting up in disgust right away. “What...is that...”

“It’s piss,” he said. “The wolves broke in, smashed up what they could, and then ruined what they couldn’t. This was some vindictive shit.”

Casey left the barn, casting one last look over the sight before flicking off the lights and shutting the door. She crossed her slender arms over her body and looked away.

“This...this is a fucking nightmare,” she said. “Those supplies are all we have.”

“No kidding,” said Jake. “But how the hell did you not notice what happened?”

She shook her head. “We were all distracted, still licking our wounds from the attack. And the day before had been distribution, so no one was running low.”

She turned her green eyes to Jake.

“We need to do something. People are going to be going through their supplies in the next few days.”

“And it’s too dangerous for members of the pack to be fucking going into town on their own.
