Jack stared out from the flames, his eyes glowing almost the same color as the fire. He looked different somehow, like an animal or creature she hadn’t seen before.

“JACK!” Justine screamed. “Jack, get out of there!”

She waved at him, feeling the heat of the fire against her skin, but Jack was not bothered by the chaos erupting around them. He stepped through the flames, his mouth twisted into a scowl of anger as he neared her.

“Where is it, Justine?” he hissed. “What did you do with it?”

Justine shook her head, not understanding.

“What? What are you talking about?”

“You know what I want!” he growled. “Where is it?”

“You’re going to catch on fire!” she screamed, realizing that she was not in the apartment, but in Hudson’s cottage. “Go, run!”

She whirled around, her eyes growing larger as the beautiful woodworking grew consumed by the flames.

“I’m sorry!” she cried out to Hudson. “I brought the trouble here!”

Jack glowered, drawing closer as he reached for her. “I need it! You’re going to get me killed,” he insisted, reaching out for her.

“But you’re already dead!” Justine yelled back, trying to step out of his reach. “Leave me alone!”

Suddenly, Hudson appeared behind him and tackled him to the ground, but Jack disappeared, leaving Hudson to flail in the flames.

“Hudson!” Justine cried, trying to fight through the fire toward him. “Hudson!”

“Run!” Hudson hissed, his face turning into a snout of fur. “Save yourself before it’s too late!”

“No!” she screamed. “No, come out of there!”

“Justine!”

Her body shook, but when she looked up, the horrific scene faded away. Her slender frame trembled as the remnants of the nightmare fell away. Hudson stood over her, his bright eyes shadowed with genuine concern.

“Are you okay?” he murmured, crouching down to meet her gaze evenly. “You were tossing and turning and crying out.”

Justine blinked away the nightmare and rubbed her eyes, sitting up on the sofa.

It was just a dream. I’m safe. I’m safe.

“Bad dream,” she mumbled, embarrassed, as she turned away. She looked around, relieved to see that there was no sign of the fire. The unfamiliar house was oddly comforting all the same. “What time is it?”

“Five in the morning,” he sighed. “I finally got everyone out of my house. Good gods, who knew lawyers liked to party so much?”

She peered at his face, realizing just how tired he looked. Guilt surged through her.

“I’m sorry,” she muttered.

“For what? I did it to myself,” Hudson reminded her. “You only planned it because I asked you.”

“No, I mean…” Justine inhaled. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I should get going.”

Hudson frowned.

“Going where?” he demanded. “You have nowhere to go. We talked about this already, remember?”

Justine bristled at his tone, but she knew he hadn’t meant to sound so cold. The stress of the past day had affected them both, and of the two, Justine knew she was the only one permitted rest.

“I can’t stay here,” she said, moving to rise from the couch, but Hudson shook his head and gently placed his hands on her shoulders, sitting her back down.
