Chapter 7

Present Day

Vanessa was just beginning to assemble the pineapple cake when Asia shot through the back door, her usual ponytail swinging down her back. Dressed down in a sweater, knit leggings and her bright pink Skechers, Vanessa was struck by how much younger her oldest daughter appeared outside of her work clothes that consisted of high-fashion pantsuits and heels. It was hard to believe Asia was closing in on the age of forty. That talkative little girl grew up to be an assistant district attorney.

Asia strutted over and hugged her. “Mama, it smells heavenly in here and I’m starving!”

“Well, you seem a bit rested from when we talked earlier this week.” She peered behind Asia, “I heard about this Detective Isaac Coleman. Does he have anything to do with the glow you have going on today?”

Asia had sat her large leather bag on the table and was attempting to sit down inside the nook. She popped back up to standing position, placing her hands on her hips. “What? Who told you, Jo? I’m going to skin her alive.”

Vanessa chuckled, “Jo mentioned you noticed the man didn’t have a ring on his finger. Sounds like you’re interested in the man to me.”

Asia sat down letting out a huff. She flipped her hair across her shoulder trying to appear nonchalant. “Well, he’s a single father of a teenage daughter so I don’t know. You know I don’t tend to date men with kids.”

Vanessa had high hopes that Asia would find someone to love. She knew her daughter had experienced the most heartaches from dating and tended to drown herself in her work. Just recently a former boyfriend and defense attorney had been killed. Asia took his death a lot harder than she let on.

Vanessa continued to apply the pineapple preserves to the cake layers, giving her daughter time to settle. “Did you stop by to say hello to your dad? He’s been out in the shop most of the day.”

“You mean the man cave. All the men seemed to make a beeline over there, especially now that it’s a bit chilly to hang out on the patio. I saw Bryan and Cam talking to Dad.”

Vanessa said, “Oh, Toni mentioned Cam would come over later. I guess she doesn’t know he’s here yet.”

Asia scoffed, “That man is wrapped around my little sister’s finger. Of course, he is going to come be with her today.”

“Well, your sisters are here and should be setting the table.”

“Good! That means it should be time to eat soon. Between the two of them, I’m sure they don’t need me.”

“I see you getting out of setting the table again, Asia. We’re still waiting on your brothers to arrive.”

“Brothers?”

Vanessa frowned at Asia. “Yes, you did remember you have brothers, Cori and Jax.”

“So, Jax is really coming? I mean I knew he mentioned it earlier this month.”

Now Vanessa was annoyed. Setting aside the knife, it was her turn to place her hands on her hips. “When are you going to stop this?”

“Stop what, Mama?” Asia looked wide-eyed.
