I whooshed back up the Helter 13 and into the garden. Then I heard voices.

Mum, already out on the terrace – and with Mr Potions2Go. Both of them, at the table, open witchfixers in front of them. With a pile of toasted brikkels, and a big jug of blorberry juice. Having a breakfast meeting…

“Kristabel,” Mr Potions2Go was booming, tapping away at his witchfixer. “I am liking what I’m hearing! I am LIKING it! An event witches will talk about for years to come. A night of fund-raising, streamed all over the witchglobe! This baby has LEGS!”

I was about to sneak round the side of the house, but I was too late – Mum had seen me.

“Flo,” she said, beckoning me over. “Flo!”

I trudged over, wishing I didn’t have to.

“Meristo,” Mum said. “This is Flo. My younger daughter.”

“Delighted,” Mr Potions2Go said. And he smiled, a wide smile, all teeth, like a sawdredger.

Then he patted me on the head. “Enchanting,” he said. “Quite enchanting.”

But you know, don’t you, as a witchkid? You know when a grown-up witch is pretending.

Just then we heard footsteps. A witch striding out to the terrace. Grandma behind her. A grown-up witch, but young, and dressed in shimmering dark green robes.

Grimmelda Hurlstruk. The daughter of Mr Potions2Go.

I knew her face from the witchscreen – but in real life, she looked harder. Taller. Her face more bony. Her mouth more thin. Her eyes more staring.

“Daddy,” she said. “You’re needed. It is time we left.”

And her voice was soft – but hard. Like steel wrapped in silk. Then she smiled – but not a real smile. A cold sort of smile.

“Grimmelda,” Mr Potions2Go said pompously, rising to his feet. “I am ALWAYS needed.”

Then he snapped his witchfixer shut. “Sadly this meeting must be concluded, Kristabel,” he said. “I have a meeting with inspectors at my Witchenfinn factory. A MOST important meeting.”

Then – oh, yuk. He grabbed Mum’s hand and he gave it a kiss. “Kristabel, I bid you farewell,” he said. “For now… But our discussions must CONTINUE.”

“Indeed,” said Mum, sounding brisk and efficient. “I shall investigate, Meristo. Work on the details. Put together some ideas.”

“What say a dinner date tomorrow night?” said Mr Potions2Go, smiling his toothy smile again. “To shimmy this skyrider towards lift-off? Shall we say eight o’clock? At mine?”

And off he strutted. “Grimmelda,” he said. “Lead the way.”

“Daddy,” she said. “I shall.”

Then she turned on her heel and was gone.
