A woman with short hair came into the medical bay, her lips locked in a grimace of pain. I didn't even need to open up my magic in order to sense that.

"Hey, is this where I can get some help?" she asked through gritted teeth.

I nodded. "Come with me." I rose to my feet and escorted her to an empty examination room.

She sat down on the bed, wincing from the effort. Blood trickled down her bicep and dripped on the floor. Not a good sign. On the other hand, injuries I could see were always easier to treat than those I couldn't.

"Sorry about the mess," she said.

"Don't you worry about that. I'm Hayley."

"Carly."

"Nice to meet you." I gestured to her arm. "Can I have a look?"

She nodded, moving so I could examine her. I reached for a bottle of sterilised water and some cloth so I could clean the blood away. It wasn't as good as proper rubbing alcohol, but that was a rarity we couldn't use on just anything. Carly hissed but remained still, letting me do my job.

"What happened?" I asked.

The other woman tensed. "A little accident."

"You can tell me the truth, I'm not here to judge. I'm here to take care of you," I said, gently touching her wrist and sending out some soothing emotions.

She relaxed slightly but didn't elaborate.

Not wanting to pressure her, I continued my examination. The cut had jagged edges and ran straight through an elegant tattoo of a cat.

"You're going to need stitches, I'm afraid. I'll do my best but it might scar. I'm sorry about your tattoo."

Carly sighed. "Poor Buttons."

"Sorry?"

"It's the name of my cat," she said, gesturing to her arm.

"Oh. I didn't realise some people named their tattoos."

"Not all shifters do," she admitted. "But Buttons here has too much character to go unnamed. To be honest, it might be a cat shifter thing."

"That's really interesting." I picked up my sewing kit. "Are you afraid of needles?"

Carly chortled. "I'd hope not, I'm a tattoo artist."

"You are?" I examined the other woman with a little bit more intrigue. "I didn't realise there were still tattoo artists around. Sorry if that sounds ignorant but I'm not overly familiar with the shifter community. I'm an empath witch."

"Empath?" She raised her eyebrows appraisingly. "That's rare."

I hummed. I concentrated on stitching her up as best as I could, trying to be as quick as possible considering there was no numbing or sedation. She sat through it, only tensing at a few moments.

"I'm done," I announced. I was sure a professional would be horrified with my work but this was as good as it got. "I tried my best not to ruin your tattoo."

"No worries, I'm used to worse." She smiled as she hopped off the table and examined my handiwork. "You did a nice job."

"Thank you."

"Thanks. Well, I owe you one. See you around." She disappeared with a wink, leaving me to tidy up.

I wasn't sure what had gotten into the residents of the Oasis,
