We parked downtown in front of a recently renovated residential building, and Faye tucked the gun against her back in the waistband of her jeans. Steep stairs lead to the second floor, and she struggled with the lock of one of four doors in a narrow hallway. The smell of fresh paint assaulted my nostrils. Eclectic furniture that didn't quite fit together greeted us from the open living room and kitchen. A big round wood table with wicker chairs, two large flowery sofas, and a brown Barcalounger completed the look.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"My place."

"Since when?"

She threw her purse on the kitchen table and opened the blinds. A thin film of dust rose into the air. "This morning."

"You rented a place just to meet with me?"

She shrugged. "Yeah. Meeting at Adeline's was getting too dangerous."

I pursed my lips together. "Because you don't trust me."

"No, because Adeline's place is close to another witch's apartment, and she's a real snitch."

"Oh."

She sat on one of the sofas with her elbows braced on her knees. "Now, about those nasty bruises… try to heal them again."

I tried and failed before slumping on the seat across from her.

"Walk me through this. What happens when you succeed?"

I recounted in detail all the times my powers had worked versus the times they hadn't.

Faye rapped her fingers against her lips. "You've got to find your trigger."

"Trigger?"

"Some witches have triggers. It's usually an emotion. Anger. Joy. Fear.

My nose crunched. "Well, I can rule out joy."

A snort escaped her, and she crossed her legs at the ankle on the coffee table.

I shifted in my seat. "What else can you teach me?"

"You sure you're up for it? We can talk. Or not even that if you prefer."

"I need the distraction."

"Okay." She stood up. "I brought a few things with me. I know you want to learn spells, but I'm more of a brewer myself. I figured I'd show you potions first."

She opened a large trunk between us on the table. The inside looked like a tea shop had married a chemistry set. There were glass vials in all shapes and sizes tightly strapped individually to one side, and a throng of little clear plastic bags holding herbs and such on the other. They were all labeled with printed stickers.

"Fell in love with a P-touch labeler?" I teased.

Faye stuck out her tongue. "I'm organized."

A few flasks contained liquids, gels, and creamy, colorful substances. She unzipped a small pouch and passed me a teardrop-shaped vial. My mind flashed back to the night Frank had used a pink substance to force me to kiss him back, and my heartbeat quickened. "What kind of potions can we make?"

"Brew. The correct verb is brew. Sleep potions, like the one Adeline used on you. Love potions, though the effects are fleeting and unpredictable." She snickered. "Truth serums, but that's useless to me. Healing tonics are my favorite. They'll cure a cold in no time. They don't have the same effects as your powers, though, since they can only help with infections and such.
