ANIMAL COMPANIONS
Like witches, wizards also have companions, known as Familiars. These are supernatural spirits that assume the form of animalsâmost often cats, toads, owls, and ratsâ to help protect the wizard.
Merlin and King Arthur find the sword, Excalibur.
MERLIN
A part from Harry Potter, probably the most famous wizard of all is Merlin, who appears in the old English legends of King Arthur. The character was based on a sixth-century Welsh hermit called Myrddin. In some of the legends, Merlin is a sinister sorcerer, renowned for his shape-shifting. However, in others he is King Arthurâs kindly adviser and protector. When he was very old, Merlin decided to share his wizard secrets with the woman Niviane, whom he loved. However, she was deceitful and used Merlinâs powers against him to trap him in a tomb forever.
