Chapter 22

Alba

During the following days, Alice explored the most obscure libraries in London, researching ley lines, ancient sites and magic epicenters in and around the city. She made little progress, and by Friday afternoon, she was worn out, frustrated and in a terrible mood. Carlo was still avoiding me, holing up in his hotel room, either dabbling in his underpants spells or sharpening his stakes in case I tried to assault him for a third time.

“I should ask Valentina...” Alice grunted, stabbing the umbrella stand. It had been raining for days, which made her even more grumpy. “I’m sure she would know.”

“Valentina, the one who kidnapped me, then tried to sell me to a scientist for research?” I asked with incredulity. Valentina was the High Priest of Alice’s coven, and our last encounter hadn’t been too friendly. “You must be kidding.”

“She doesn’t know I’m here with you. I told her I was going to Salem on an exchange program for witches.”

I huffed and put on the kettle while she sat at the kitchen table and took off her damp socks. “That’s the most ridiculous lie I’ve heard in my life.”

“Well, she believed it. She’s a powerful witch, but she’s almost one century old. I told her it was an internet thing, and that was enough to convince her.”

The sound of a key turning in the lock alerted me, and I stood up abruptly. I rushed to the door with my claws out, followed by Alice, who was armed with a teaspoon.

Laura and Lucille came out of wherever they had been hiding and dashed over our heads whispering gibberish in French.

As the door opened, Clarence’s tall figure filled the hall, and I fell into his open arms with a gasp, forgetting to retract my nails. He withstood my embrace stoically, and it wasn’t until I released him that I noticed his blood on my claws.

“Sorry!” I exclaimed, rubbing the ruined back of his coat. “I’m just so happy to see you!”

“Are you?” he asked, a cold undertone in his voice.

“Of course I am, what’s wrong with you?” I stepped back, taking in his weary appearance and the extreme paleness of his lips. “Are you okay?”

“I am fine,” he replied, although his eyes were screaming, I am not.

I heard Francesca walking up the stairs, and beside her, a voice I hadn’t heard for what seemed an eternity.

“Jean-Pierre!”

I ran to him, overjoyed to finally see my old vampire friend.

“Ma belle,” he said, stroking my hair with fondness. “He was right.” He nodded toward Clarence. “You are even more beautiful than you used to be.”

“Thank you, Jean-Pierre,” I said, kissing the side of his snow-white beard.

“Mercier? Is that you?”

Laura was hovering headless between us, her voice coming from the other side of the corridor. Jean-Pierre didn’t seem to understand until little Lucille rushed to her mother and held Laura’s head over her neck―at that moment, recognition flashed in the vampire’s eyes.

Jean-Pierre blinked and gaped at the ghost in front of him. He closed his
