Chapter Ten

~Sophia~

I waited for Taegan to pull Violet’s body out of the fridge before stepping up beside her and starting to set up my stuff.

Earlier, when I brought back Leo, I didn’t have my candles and stones set out. I was short a few other helpful ingredients but magic mainly was about intent. Most of the things used in rituals were meant to help the witch channel the energy bringing their intentions to life.

I was hoping that with all of my channeling aids in place, I wouldn’t be so drained and pass out this time.

“Okay,” I said, stepping back after lighting the last candle. “I think I’m ready to place the heart back in Violet’s chest now.” I cringed at what that meant. I’d have to put my hand inside my cousin’s corpse.

“You want me to do it?” Taegan offered, sensing my discomfort.

“No. This needs a delicate touch and a small hand. Not big meaty man hands.”

“Hey!” Taegan and Andrew said simultaneously as Raelynn snickered.

“I meant no offense, guys. Now shush while I work. I have a feeling we don’t have much time left to do this. There won’t be a second attempt.”

The room went deathly quiet at my words. I could feel all eyes on me as I took Violet’s heart from the cooler and began the delicate process of putting it back into her chest. “Tae, can you use the flashlight on my phone to shine in here so I can get the valves lined up?”

“On it.” Taegan came to stand on the opposite side of Violet and pointed his phone’s flashlight right where I needed it.

“Thanks.” I worked quietly after that, making sure to line everything up as evenly as I could so that when I started the healing spell, it could knit together with ease. “Done. Now for the healing spell to attach the heart back to the body. Only then can I attempt the resurrection.” I went to wipe my hands on my pants and thought better of it since they would be covered in yuck. “Here goes.”

I placed my hand over the hole in Violet’s chest and focused on her heart reconnecting with her body. I’d never healed a dead body before and wasn’t even sure it would work. All of this was new to me. Slowly my hand began to glow, the light radiating into the hole until finally, it began to close, meaning the heart had healed in its proper place. Once the hole closed completely, I removed my hand and stumbled back. The spell had weakened me more than I’d anticipated.

“Easy there,” Andrew said, reaching out to steady me until Taegan could get to me.

“Are you okay, babe?” Taegan asked, scooping me up.

I gave a tired laugh. “I’m fine. Seems healing a dead body takes more energy than healing a live one.” I rested my head on his chest and closed my eyes. Just for a moment…

“Sophia,” Violet’s voice called to me in the darkness. “Sophia, I can feel myself fading.” The urgency in her voice pushed me awake.
