The chatter that filled the air for Coven Night was almost as warm as the bonfires already raging in old oil drums and whatever else had been converted into a place to burn stuff.

I glanced at the hot drinks line, debating joining it. I wasn't a tea witch, which meant that I had to settle for something else, at least until the tea plantation started to properly flourish, but I didn't mind that too much. I knew they needed it for their magic, it wasn't about hoarding resources, it was about spreading them to where they were needed the most.

Someone patted me on the back and I turned, smiling when I realised it was Gus. I still wasn't used to having my brother back at Purple Oasis but it was wonderful.

"You want to have a drink with us?" Gus gestured towards where his friends from the Nest, and his girlfriend, were waiting.

"No, I'm meeting someone," I replied.

His goose familiar let out a loud quack and flapped his wings.

"Shut up, Goose," Gus said, looking back at me. "Who are you meeting that's more important than spending time with your favourite brother?"

I gave him a good-natured shove. "None of your business, bird brain."

"A guy?" he asked with a knowing look. "Have fun. Don't break his heart."

"Eurgh, what's Carly been saying?"

"You forget you were dating before the world ended, this is all my own observation," Gus responded.

"Pfft. Not all of us fall in love with the first girl we see."

"Yeah, but you don't like girls," he pointed out. "And I didn't fall in love with Morgan the first time I saw her either."

"Well, I'm not like you and Carly."

Gus gave me a look that said he didn't believe me. "Sure you aren't. Have fun with your weather witch." He grinned as if he knew he'd caught me, and headed off to see his friends.

I rolled my eyes. I missed when he was too young to care about these things. It was still strange that he'd grown up in his time at the Nest and that I'd missed it. Gus' goose familiar let out a loud honk and waddled off, causing my brother to chase after him. I watched them go with a smile. If I could turn back time, I was sure Carly and I would handle his unrest differently but would it have yielded a different outcome? It was impossible to know and at least he was back with us now.

I scanned the assembled people, looking for Max among them, but I didn't see him. With nothing else for it, I settled on one of the half walls near the entrance and combed my fingers through Daisy's fur, determined not to let her out of my sight tonight. I was still not over losing her during the storm and while I could've left her in my room, Max seemed to really like her.

She perked her ears up and I straightened my back, hopeful that she'd spotted Max. To my delight, I saw the Asian guy coming up the path with his sister by his side.
