I dreamed about Grey. I suppose it was inevitable, especially after the day we had together. He’d lifted my spirits and being with him had let me forget for just a little while that I was in exile.

I really missed Sabrina.

I wanted to hide under the sheet with her and tell her all about him and how it felt when he nearly kissed me. I wanted to lie beside her and stare up at the sky and talk and daydream about what it would be like if Grey and I were together.

I rolled over with a groan and picked up my journal. Flipping to the last entry, the one from the night before where I wrote all about him and the weird magical feeling and spending the day with him and how much I wished he’d kissed me when we said goodbye. I had hoped Sabrina would reply, but again, the page was blank.

I tossed the journal back in the drawer and flopped back on the pillows, once more staring up at the ceiling. I should probably stick something up there to look at, but I doubted Ms. Peabody would like that very much.

The sun shone in through the sheer lace curtains, lighting the room with soft, warm light. It was exactly one week since I’d arrived on the mainland and it had been such a rollercoaster of emotions. I hoped the next week wouldn’t be so traumatic.

The breakfast bell clanged, and with a sigh, I threw the covers off and rolled out of bed. I changed into a pair of yoga pants and a t-shirt and headed downstairs.

Dane and Cecilia went back to their ignoring me routine, and I sighed. I thought maybe I’d broken the ice the night before at dinner, but apparently not. I hated these silent meals. They made me even more homesick for the loud family meals at Wisteria House.

“What are you reading?” I asked Dane as he turned the page in his newspaper.

He looked up at me and blinked. “The newspaper.”

“Anything interesting happening in the world?” I asked.

Dane sighed heavily, like my question was a burden. “There have been some heksejegere rumours.”

Rumours about witch hunters? In the newspaper? It must be a heks newspaper.

“What?” Cecilia asked, her eyes going to Dane.

“Yeah, what?”

I knew there were witch hunters, but I’d never had to worry about them. They couldn’t get onto Crescent Isle, but being on the mainland was different.

“Nothing concrete,” he said, turning back to the newspaper. “Just rumours.”

I squirmed in my seat, happy for the conversation to die, and I turned my attention to the food.

I had to give it to Ms. Peabody. Her breakfasts were pretty good. She always laid on a spread with bacon and eggs and tiny little sausages, toast, mini croissants, and fruit salad and yoghurt. Sometimes she even made fresh muffins.

“There’ll be a room inspection today at 2 pm. I expect your bed made with clean sheets and your towels washed.”

Ms. Peabody left without waiting for us to acknowledge her.
