Where did I get the idea that I deserve to be happy? It’s been a brutal process to discover that marriage can sometimes feel like a nightmare, and that work is often tolerable at best.

The other day I heard the ridiculous idea that the film The Little Mermaid is full of phallic symbols and that this is indicative of Disney’s plot to corrupt our children. What about the real damage fairy tales cause? Namely, they perpetuate the lie that if I find the right person, or things, I will live happily ever after. Isn’t entitlement to happiness the core presumption of all our media outlets? Or does the lie come from each year being subjected to four hundred billion dollars worth of advertising committed to creating and satisfying my desires? Maybe it comes from childhood, when we chased one entertaining and fun thing after another. Deep down, I believe I deserve to be happy, and I assume that the usual gods—job, money, house, kids and experiences—will deliver. Process is only a means to the end.
