Tony continues to reflect on his difficult day. Lee didn’t call me when he got back to the shop as I’d asked. Of course it might be that Joe hadn’t passed on my message, but I doubted it. I had rushed back home after leaving the shop, arriving a little after my client, the amazing fluctuating bride, who was standing on the drive looking anxious. I apologised for my tardiness and led her into the little room I use for client consultations.

While I paid her my full outward attention, one part of my mind still focused on Lee. I kept listening out for the phone call that would tell me he’d gotten back to work without mishap.

Thankfully the bride-to-be seemed to have stabilised on the weight front. She was delighted with the ring, holding up her hand to admire it on her finger, her rather plain face shining pretty with pleasure. It was a complicated and intricate design in platinum and rose gold. It had been a devil to size up and down without spoiling the flow of the pattern. It was slightly loose, but I persuaded her this was a good thing, as her fingers were likely to swell if it were a hot day. I assured her she could come back to me afterwards if she felt any adjustment was needed.

After saying goodbye and wishing her a fair day for her wedding and a lifetime of happiness with her husband, I turned my thoughts to Lee and his lack of obedience, and also basic courtesy in calling me as I’d asked. I rang the shop and asked Janet if he had returned from lunch. To my relief she said yes, and asked if I wanted a word with him. I declined. There was nothing to be gained from a phone conversation on the matter. He and I were due discussions. It could go on the list.

After speaking with Janet I decided to have a strenuous session on my drum kit to work off some of my stress and annoyance. It did me good. After drumming up a beat storm I felt calmer and clearer of mind. I wasn’t going to let Lee’s behaviour pass. It was Marion and Joe’s wedding anniversary. I’d made the earrings. He’d just have to live with it. Everything he had done today, in fact for the past week or more had been in response to those two things. He’d allowed them to negatively influence and distort his view of everything. I’d had enough. It was time to take my ill-mannered, bad-tempered brat back in hand again.

I was hoping Lee’s mood would have improved over the course of the afternoon. It hadn’t. If anything it was worse. His welcome was less than warm. It wasn’t even civil. I entered the shop just as a man with a huge bouquet of flowers was leaving. He looked pleased with his purchase. I smiled and held open the door for him, wishing him a good day. Closing it, I turned to see Lee.
