The 2010 NCAA tournament Elite 8 and Sweet 16 team statistics provide excellent information on the increasing use of the three-point shot (see table 5.4). All the records were rewritten, including three set by Cornell (see table 5.5): three-point field goal percentage, 42.9 percent; total three-point field goals made, 9.5; and three-point field goals attempted, 22. That same year, Butler and West Virginia took 20 three-point shots per game, and midmajor Eastern Kentucky averaged taking 24 three-point shots, making 10 per game. The Virginia Military Institute, which ran a rapid-fire offense much like Paul Westhead’s Loyola of Marymount team, led the nation with an average of 35 three-point attempts per game and 11 makes. VMI also led all teams for single-game three-point shots by attempting 63, 49, and 44 on different occasions.
