Chapter 13
Iâm sobbing into Owelâs shoulder as we fly away into the night sky. I canât believe that Blanche is gone, that she was taken away from me so quickly. I know we only knew each other for about a month, but it felt like Iâve known her my entire life. She was the very best friend I ever had. There will never be another friend as sweet and kind as Blanche.
Owel lets me cry into his shoulder and neck until my eyes are completely drained of tears. He rubs my back with one of his hands while he carries me as he flies us straight into the morning. The sun rises up and the clouds begin to thicken, shielding the earth from the glorious rays of sunshine. The clouds turn grey and angry, thunder heard not too far away.
âWeâll have to find some cover. We donât want to be caught in this storm.â Owel mentions as he starts to descend under the clouds. Once we get underneath, the rain drenches us, making it hard for Owel to beat his wings. We fall kind of heavy onto the ground, in a corn field. I roll out of Owelâs arms and into stalks of corn, knocking them over to the ground.
We both sit in the field, breathing heavily. I notice I no longer feel the vibration in my limbs and wings, wondering if the faecium has worn off.
âDo⦠you⦠still⦠feel⦠anything?â I ask, out of breath.
Owel looks at me and then his hands, breathing hard. He shakes his head from side to side. âNo, not anymore.â
We sit in silence after that. Letting the rain wash over us, both of us feeling completely helpless right now. Even the sky is upset about Blancheâs death.
âWhat⦠What do we do now?â I ask while staring at Owel helplessly.
âOur plan should still stay the same⦠We need to get to the Seelie Court.â Owel tells me, his chin pointed towards the sky as he looks up.
âBut how are we going to get there? Blanche was the only one who knew the way.â I mention, exasperated.
Owel thinks on this for a few beats before commenting, âWeâll just have to find someone else who knows the way.â
âWho?â I ask again.
âMy fatherâ¦â Owel replies quietly.
âBut will he see you? I thought you were exiled?â I feel bad for asking so many questions but I need answers.
âWe will just have to wait and see.â Owelâs response is clipped so I stop pestering him. I walk on my hands and knees towards him and curl up upon his lap, nestling my head in the crook of his neck.
Owel and I wait in this position until the skies let up and stop raining. In the meantime, we both tried to eat something but neither of us had the stomach to eat more than a couple bites of cheese. After the rain stops, we wait some more for our wings to dry in the sun before taking off in flight again.
This time, I fly next to Owel, our hands gripped tightly onto each other.
