“Gemma,” Rhyland said urgently. The two of us were almost back to the gates of Twelve. I stepped close to see Gemma’s lashes resting on her cheeks, her lips parted as her head lolled against Rhyland’s shoulder. She’d lost consciousness.

Fear spiked in my chest. “We’ve got to get her to Noah.”

If we hadn’t gone to get her tonight… I might have lost her forever. My heart squeezed. I was so angry at her for keeping Noah’s secrets from me, for choosing Noah over me, but the thought of losing her made everything else pale.

“She’s sicker than when we were kids.” Rhyland’s worry was written across his face. His violence earlier had reminded me of how gleefully cold he could be, but it was different once someone made it behind his wall, like Gemma and I both had.

“She’ll be okay once we get her there,” I said.

Something rippled in the shadows outside the walls of Twelve, and the next moment, the moonlight reflected off white wings. Noah sauntered out of the shadows, his hands in his pockets, but his gaze was fixed on Gemma.

“Have you been watching us this whole time?” I demanded.

“Not the whole time.” His voice was distracted, and he held out his arms. “Give her to me.”

“What’s the magic word?” Rhyland asked, but he transferred Gemma carefully to Noah’s arms.

“Prison.” Noah said crisply. He walked ahead of us through the gate. When the guards moved to intercept us, he said, “They’re with me.”

The guards stared at us as if they couldn’t imagine why a couple of Nephilim with blood on their knuckles would be welcomed into Twelve, but they listened to Noah. We passed through the gates into the bright city.

“Lucky us,” Rhyland said, taking my hand.

“I’m going ahead with Gemma.” Noah glanced back at the two of us, his eyes supernaturally bright. “Catch up if you can.”

He took a few bounding steps, then soared into the air, his white wings snapping out.

Rhyland cast a longing look over his shoulder at the gate, but he’d never leave without Beckett.

“We’ve got to get away from Noah,” I said softly. “Maybe on our way to the front?”

“Maybe.” Rhyland looked doubtful. “We need to find out what he’s got planned, because I’m pretty sure he’s going to expect us to run.”

“You could try to get close to him,” I said. “Pretend you’re on a trip down memory lane, want to hang out and talk about the old days. Start softening him up.”

I wasn’t sure anyone, even Rhyland, could soften Noah up in time, though.

Rhyland scoffed. “Aren’t the four of us perpetually going down memory lane? It never leads anywhere good.”

“Would you try, please?” I asked softly.

Getting away from Noah would be better for us and for him. Once it was just the five of us, Shade would try to kill Noah. And even though I might tell myself the asshole deserved it, the thought still made my chest squeeze painfully.

Rhyland gave me a long look, then put his arm around my shoulders and squeezed me into his side.
