Chapter Five

Stephanie had forgotten about the DragonPom on her way to leave the gas station. Thankfully, they still had enough of the homemade version to make Amma happy.

Lee had obviously known about the human trafficking situation. In fact, it seemed like he knew too much about the human trafficking situation. Not in a suspicious way, but in a way that made her wonder if he worked for the FBI or CIA. It would explain his people skills... and his physique.

She watched him visibly swallow as she peered at him, never breaking eye contact.

Who was he?

“Let’s all go out for drinks tonight,” she blurted.

Lee and Marigold both looked at her like she was crazy.

She flushed. “What? I’m going to need to blow off steam after being stuck in here listening to gunshots with no idea what’s going on.”

“You never go out,” Marigold said.

“Yes, I do. When I need to blow off steam.”

“Yes,” Lee said. “I’ll go with you. At least until the adrenaline wears off.”

Marigold smiled. “I’ll see if I can get out of my church meeting. Don’t forget to invite Becca. She’d kill you.”

Stephanie covered her face with her hand. “I’m gonna have to get Amma to bed at a decent hour. I hope she doesn’t catch on to any of this.”

“What happened to the girl?” Stephanie asked.

Even when he was cringing, Lee’s eyes were two pools of pure swoon material. “Girls. There were two. They’re getting them home as soon as possible. Should be tonight.”

Stephanie found herself breathing deeply, on instinct, trying to calm herself. She didn't want these things going on in the same town as Amma or Amma's friends. She thought of the friends who had come over for sleepovers, of video game tournaments, and every flavor of ice cream mashed into one bowl.

Stephanie didn’t want these kinds of things going on at all.

When Stephanie had told Becca about hanging out downtown that night, Becca wanted to bring two boytoys she had been flirting with. But when Marigold announced she couldn’t get out of her church thing, Becca’s tone changed entirely. Suddenly she was happy to only bring one man along.

It wasn’t until Stephanie had almost reached the bar that she realized Becca was turning this into a double date.

“Shit,” Stephanie said to the red light where she was waiting. She was going to spend the whole night with her face red from Becca's teasing. She wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing she had dressed up as if she was going on a date—nicest jeans, trendiest boots, hoop earrings. Smelled like a flower shop, and every article of clothing that could be was the color of champagne. Her favorite color. Her lucky color.

Lee might not know about her lucky color, but he would think she was in on it, that she had coordinated with Becca. Bad thing. Definitely a bad thing.

She considered canceling or at least going home to change. It wasn't that she didn't want Lee to know she liked
