Then it was my turn:

The green grove is gone from the hill, Maggie,

Where first the daisies sprung.

The creaking old mill is still, Maggie,

Since you and I were young.

Maggie stopped suddenly, as if she’d forgotten a casserole in the oven at home.

“Oh, dear,” she said. “Excuse me, Walt. I’ll be right back.”

“What’s the matter? Is something …?”

But she was gone. The Squire walked by me, followed closely by Willy. The Squire looked irritated.

“Willy, quit buggin’ me!” he snarled.

“Aw, c’mon, Squire,” pleaded Willy. “Next Wednesday. Demeter Downs Raceway. Our guest. You look over the racing form and, no pressure, we’ll just see what comes to you.”

The Squire waved him away. “It doesn’t work like that. I can’t turn it on and off like a light bulb.”

“Okay, okay,” said Willy. “Tell you what. We try Chicago again; it’s perfect … we do the cattle, you do the futures.”

The Squire stopped and touched his forehead. “Something’s comin’ to me now … flashing red lights. Cruisers. Bars on windows. G’day, Freddy … Don.”

“Mrs. Lynch wants you to have a look at her bingo card, Squire,” said Don solemnly.

“And when you’re done there, could you have a peek at my Pick Six numbers for the Nevada?” said Freddy.

“No, I couldn’t! Now back off, all of yas!”

The band struck up “The Crooked Stovepipe,” and Freddy grabbed the microphone. The hall divided itself magically into groups of eight, and Freddy launched into one of his convoluted square dance calls.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” he announced. “This here’s called ‘Wingfield in the Straw.’ ”

Four hands up, and away we go

Around the hall with a do-see-do

Walt quit the job and bought some land

A hundred acres of rocks and sand.
