Chapter Eighteen

Jonathan

Kellan glanced around before speaking again. “Jonathan, I know you’ve already told us all that Stoker’s book took a lot of liberties with the truth, but in the book, it mentions you with the three brides of Dracula.”

Jonathan’s throat constricted, and his lightheartedness faded away. He coughed and cleared his throat. So far, his stroll through campus with Kellan had dredged up nearly every painful event from his past. First his brothers, and now the Weird Sisters. “Actually, in the book, Stoker never calls them Dracula’s brides. No one does. And they don’t call themselves that either.”

“So, they’re real?” asked Kellan, surprise on his face.

“Yes. The Weird Sisters are real,” confirmed Jonathan, wanting to change the subject. He would have, had he not sensed just how much the young wolf-shifter needed to talk with someone about whatever had been troubling him.

“Weird Sisters?” asked Kellan.

With a shrug, Jonathan began to walk once more. “I didn’t name them.”

Kellan followed closely.

“Prince Dick-u-la himself called them that,” admitted Jonathan. “I just went with it. Guess Stoker thought that was good enough for them too. From the details he did include, I have to wonder if they didn’t pay him a visit at some point. Because there were things he mentioned that I never told him. Things no one but me knew.”

“So, they really did…?” Kellan’s words fell away, remaining unspoken between them.

“Pin me down and use me as a refillable bloody juice box?” asked Jonathan, attempting to lighten the mood.

“Yeah,” Kellan responded.

“They did.” Jonathan glanced upward at the moon, finding solace in it. He pressed a smile to his face when he glanced at Kellan again. “Jealous?”

“No,” whispered Kellan as he shook his head. “Being pinned under them as they take what they want from you, without your permission, all the while mocking you, doesn’t sound like it would be the least bit fun.”

“It wasn’t,” said Jonathan. In the past, when the topic came up with others, most made a comment about how they’d be more than happy to be stuck under the thumb of three beautiful seductresses, even if they had fangs and demons in them. It was easy to think that was the case. Living it was something altogether different. To this very day, Jonathan was never on his back when he was intimate with women. No. He remained in control, never fully surrendering himself to them.

“I’m sorry,” said Kellan softly. “That you had to go through that.”

Jonathan took a deep breath and inclined his head once more. “Can we talk about something else?”

“Yeah,” replied Kellan, offering nothing.

After a few minutes of silence, Jonathan spoke. “Have anyone special in your life? Someone you maybe haven’t mentioned to your parents for fear your mother will read too much into it and start sending out wedding invites?”

Kellan erupted into laughter so loud that it drew looks from others passing by. He banged on his chest. “You know Mom well.”

“I do,” said Jonathan. “And I know she wants you happy.”

Kellan scratched the back of his neck.
