3e. Variable speed wind turbines

Variable speed wind turbines have been introduced to reduce loads in the transmissions system (gear loads) and loads on the blades. A variation in rotational speed of some 10–20% means that mechanical stresses (moments) are reduced dramatically. At the same time the overall efficiency of the turbine increases. Modern regulation technology also gives rise to reduced stresses during operation by providing possibilities for fast changes in the shaping of the rear edge.
