The Only Thing Permanent is Change

I am certain the youth structure at the highest levels in the U.S. will be restructured again and again—probably right after this book’s publication. Development Academy may no longer be the so-called highest youth level of play. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a “Global Academy” with play scheduled in Europe, Mexico, or South America, and who knows what could come after that.

I wrote that last paragraph in 2018, and sure enough, in April 2020, U.S. Soccer abruptly terminated the Development Academy program after thirteen years. It claimed the closure was due to pandemic-related funding challenges. While on the surface this seemed to be a disaster for youth soccer, two high-level organizers immediately stepped in to fill the void, the Major League Soccer (MLS) system that had been a part of the Development Academy, and the Elite Clubs National League.

Still, the fundamental youth-sports systems remain in place, and with each adult-mandated restructuring, athletes get yanked around, have to find a new home, and write additional checks. The organizational structures, level names, and relative commitments (time and money) may change, but the U.S. youth-sports industrial complex will always forever march forward.

Just before our move, the Fury travel team competed in NCSL’s Division 1 during the spring of 2015 and finished a respectable third with a 6–3–0 record. Fury also competed in Division 2 of EDP and was the runner-up with a 7–0–1 record. Evan remained slotted on his travel and new high school teams that best fit his athletic abilities and academic interests—and our family’s move was about to put the journey back on track for his final three years of youth sports.
