The Seventies: The Party’s Over

If the sixties were a period of expansion and growth—a “high” of sorts in both consciousness and economy—the seventies were the start of the “crash” and found society pulling in, constricting. Economic recessions and high inflation dampened material expectations; Watergate and other scandals led to increasing cynicism about government and a further loss of models of honesty and integrity.

The stimulation and excitement of student strikes and rock concerts faded into memory as baby boomers began facing the demands of adult life—jobs, rent, and intimacy (not to mention the repayment of all those student loans). High expectations ran head-on into stark reality. Illusions—that the world was without limits, that drugs were like magic and had no drawbacks—were challenged.

From feeling powerful—indeed omnipotent—in the sixties, this generation had to face the reality that they hadn’t really been able to revolutionize society, that society’s march toward ever-increasing materialism was continuing without them, and that the choice was either to join the fold, at least to some degree, or remain societal outcasts (and suffer more painful isolation).

Never provided with the necessary problem-solving skills in childhood, and entrenched in a belief system that encouraged immediate gratification, the first quick-fix generation tried to grow up but found themselves in search of never-never land.
