Chapter Ten

I leaned on the counter with my chin propped in my hand, staring out the front window of my shop. My perfectly boring life had been turned completely upside down and I had no idea how to flip it right side up again.

Killian had been an unexpected surprise. I went on a hunt for a zombie and found a sexy reaper instead. A reaper, who was thoughtful, funny, and frustratingly friends with my ex-boyfriend.

I groaned and dropped my head to the counter. For the first time, I wished my mom was here to give me advice. This was a puzzle that she would love to solve. Especially if her helping meant that her daughter would finally come out of her dry spell.

Lifting my head, I double checked the time. Drayce should be here soon. I had called him first thing this morning and asked him to meet me here. He sounded almost relieved that I called. Which meant he at least wasn’t upset with me. Yet.

I couldn’t even eat this morning, my stomach was wound up in knots wondering how Drayce would react when he found out Thane was my ex. Would he still want his help? Or was I reading too much into our relationship? Not knowing if he even wanted to have one with me.

I released an exasperated breath and opened up Love Blooms to where I had last left off. I was tempted to flip to the end of the book, to see if Zirconia got her happy ending with her four mates. Who was I kidding? It was a romance, of course there would be a happily ever after for her. If only the same could hold true for me.

The door chimed and I glanced up, to find Drayce entering with two Jewels Cafe cups in his hands. Praise the gods this man was a keeper.

His hair was windblown and a loose strand hung across his forehead. “Morning,” he greeted, his smile turning my insides to mush.

When he rounded the corner of the counter, I reached out to brush the hair off his face, only to realize I was still holding my book. Hoping he didn’t notice the half dressed men on the cover, I blindly chucked the book under the counter.

Drayce’s gaze followed the trajectory of the book, but he just shrugged and handed me my latte. While I had never tried ambrosia, nectar of the gods, I had a feeling it was the equivalent of a Jewels Cafe morning brew.

I grabbed Drayce’s hand as I walked past and led him to two oversized cream colored chairs in the corner. Releasing him, I sat in one of the comfortable chairs and tucked my feet underneath me. Cradling my cup, I waited for Drayce to take the other seat. In his heather gray t-shirt and black joggers, he looked like he had just come back from a run.

Once Drayce was settled I said, “I’m sorry about last night. That wasn’t how I planned for it to end.
