That very afternoon I told Rev I needed to collect grasses for a new winnowing basket to separate the cacao shells. Of course the old one would have done fine, but Rev didn’t question it, only nodded and kept his face in his book.

Mayapple was happy to run free to our sacred place. I was grateful to feel the wind in my face. My heart kept pace with May’s gallop when I thought about what might be waiting for me in my copybook.

The cold had broken again and the weather had turned mild for a spell. Papa said it meant a big storm would probably be heading our way. Instead of reading my copybook there by the river, I grabbed it and led Mayapple into the woods to find a quiet place. I reckoned that moving away from my usual perch would be smart.

I opened the book to the last folded page and found a curious response.
